Black Is … Black Ain’t
In many sequences, African-American documentary filmmaker Marlon Riggs addresses the camera from his hospital bed before his death in 1994 from issues connected to AIDS. Clips of hip-hop songs including misogynistic and anti-gay slurs are paired with interviews with African-American intellectuals and political theorists like Cornel West, bell hooks, and Angela Davis to confront sexism and homophobia within the black community.
