John Ford: Dreaming the Quiet Man
Interviews with Ford fans such as Martin Scorsese, Peter Bogdanovicz, Jim Sheridan, William Dowling, and Joe McBride are included in 'Dreaming the Quiet Man.' There is a mesmerizing archive and rare photographs of the film's production. The documentary's main setting is Ford's ancestral homeland of Connemara, on Ireland's west coast, where his parents were born. We meet Ford's relatives, the Feeneys, who tell us about his parents' escape from Ireland following the Great Famine, and how the young Ford returned to Ireland in 1922 to visit his cousins, the Thorntons, and witnessed their house burned down by the infamous Black and Tans. Ford gave money to the IRA under the guise of scouting locations for a film. We travel to Portland, Maine, where Ford grew up and went on to become a director in Hollywood's early days. The lad did well, but Ireland was always on his mind.
