Limite
Limite is the only feature-length film by the Brazilian filmmaker and author Mário Peixoto, who was only 22 years old when he filmed it. Inspired by a haunting portrait by André Kertész on the cover of a French magazine, this avant-garde silent masterwork focuses on a man and two women adrift at sea, their pasts unraveling through flashbacks accompanied by the music of Erik Satie, Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky, and others. Limite, an early independent South American film, was notoriously inaccessible for the most of the 20th century. It is a pioneering accomplishment whose enduring visual poetry continues to captivate.
