Servant or Slave
During the Stolen Generations, the Australian government abducted thousands of Aboriginal girls and forced them into domestic servitude. They were ostensibly engaged as servants, but with complete control over their movements, wages, and housing conditions, their lives all too regularly devolved into an irreversible cycle of abuse, rape, and enslavement, with lasting consequences. Servant or Slave is a powerful piece of first-person testimony recounting the tales of five of these women — Rita, Violet, and the three Wenberg sisters. Servant or Slave is a book of profound grief and urgency, bringing to vivid life the human tragedy of Australia's Indigenous history via the unadorned words of those who lived it.
