The Tree
There is nothing more unspectacular than collecting water, or can there be? It's really a simple job, but it takes almost 45 minutes, in what seems like real time: the person walks through the narrow streets, dog in tow, and stopping to grab glass bottles at the bright doorways, before going down to the darkened river. A queue, a trek over land last but not least the bottles are filled. It's already sunrise. The night was quiet, save to the noise of these bottles clinking together and the pounding of the guns in the distance, that has to be why the person met no one, why what's as still as a painting, like what the boy sees from this window at the beginning, a village plucked from a mythic. The grade of the light is slightly off kilter, although Considering all of the extended monitoring shots, it would be tempting to call this lifetime, all saturated reds greens and yellows. The landscape is lit like a stage-set.
